It is one hundred years since Hull City Football Club was formed and this play is about four generations of City supporters. Alan Plater is football mad and it shows in this great play about the games' followers. We follow three generations of Williams; the first bought the original goalkeeper's cap and decreed that the the next generation's William had to attend his first match wearing it. There is a lot about goalkeepers, referees and the long suffering wives, who all have to bear one liners to make the eager audience laugh, but it all works and time flies.

The cast interchange characters and give a riot of fine acting with Martin Barrass playing Bill, Una McNulty as Mary and Roy North as William. Martin Barrass has a great time with his characters and shows what a great character actor he is. Una McNulty has to foil the males and shows great talent doing it. Roy North gives one of his fine resourceful character performances. All this played against a great musical background with first rate direction by Gareth Tudor Price.

There is nowhere quite like Hull Truck theatre and when you give the theatre to one of its founders to put on a new play it's magic. This was a great evening of theatre, change the word Hull and this play could fit into any town in Britain. A must see play, it is a homage to football. © BA
