Now when you go to see a Gordon Steel play you know what you are in for, but it would be nice to see if he could look at his subjects from a different angle and give us a surprise. Kissing Married Women seems to have nothing to do with the title, for it deals with a pair of house clearers whose bad language and approach to women is, to say the least, a little misguided, but they both have problems. Gordon Steel directs and so you get exactly what is going on in his head.
Micky, played by Jason Furnival, is a disillusioned married man who gives the impression that he knows all there is to know about how to get a woman. His colleague is easily led Daft Dave, which says it all, played by Graham Martin. The girl from the office, Carole, who keeps them supplied with work, is played by Emma Ashton, who also takes on all the other female roles. These three actors work hard with their parts and give professional performances despite the bad language that they have to utter or endure. Some of the situations and the actors' interpretations would have been funny set against any background and they are worthy of praise for what they achieved.
The language was gross and full of sexual innuendo, the plot well constructed and the acting was first rate. This play is pitched at a certain audience. At the moment a small section of the community wants this sort of entertainment, but the fashion will change and Gordon Steel should try his hand at something else before the tide turns. This audience laughed and seemed to enjoy what they had seen, but not all will. Try it, but be warned. © BA
