John Godber was searching for a subject for his new play, and came up with two lads who had just completed their doctorates in theatre studies at university, but who then find themselves with nowhere to go except supply teaching. Not a very exciting formula. Then he comes up with letting them fulfil their theatre side by wrestling for money. Here the plot starts to get bitty by introducing two girls who sing and give distraction. This is not one of Godber's best ideas and it is transferred into a play of the same ilk.
Jeff (Matthew Booth) and Jack (Jack Brady) are the lads who are disillusioned with their worth and drift into wrestling to pay the bills. Kate Baines and Amy Thompson play several parts as groupies and masked wrestlers, as well as enlivening the action with their excellent singing. John Godber showed us a different side as he wrote the lyrics to John Pattison's original music. There is not much to say about the plot except not much exists that could not have been pushed into a one act play.
Actors in the audience disappeared at the interval, the rest of us saw it through and gave the actors on stage encouragement for their efforts at its conclusion. © BA
