Magic

Mix a lion, a witch and a wardrobe and you must come up with something out of the ordinary and that is exactly what C S Lewis did when he wrote the story of the adventures of four children from London sent to live in a big country house during the second world war. The children land up staying with a professor eager to believe what they tell him, and so all is set for adventure.

Adrian Noble directs this magical play with the assistance of Frances Moore. Some of the set design is great, with deft movement of scenery to give that sleight of hand used by magicians. The children are led through the wardrobe by Lucy, played by Caroline Martin, a girl bestowed with a charming voice which she uses to good effect in her singing numbers. Her brother Edmund, played by Jean-Marc Perret, creates problems for them all with his unpredictable behaviour, but sister Susan played by Emma Fildes and brother Peter played by Liam Evans-Ford are soon enlisted to help fight the Wicked White Witch. They encounter Mr and Mrs Beaver, Mr Tumnus (faun), and of course Aslam the great lion. Professor Kirk, played by Jeffry Wickham, listens and a story becomes reality. To see how these are mixed to make the story means that you will have to visit the Royal Shakespeare theatre and indulge yourself in the magic.

Even the programme has games to play and stories to be read. Children cowered under coats when they did not like a character or came forward out of their seats and cheered as their favourite characters came onto the stage. A play with all the emotions for all the family to share. All went home chattering about what they had seen and no doubt eager to tell their friends. Great fun, with some splendid music written by Shaun Davey to be sung and enjoyed. Make sure you go to see this family fun. © BA.
