It is nice to go to the theatre and experience classical music masquerading as the framework for a musical. It was a joy to listen as the pianist, Jonathan Gill, interplayed with the cellist, Diane Stewart, to produce quality. This was an unusual musical, based on an actual event, with a well told tale of the whale named Collette, that is washed up on the beach and befriended by a local boy.
The Jonah Boy is in repertory at the McCarthy in Scarborough from the 17th February to the 12th of March, 2005. This is a No Smoking theatre.
The boy, played by Jon-Paul Hevey, is a lonely boy overshadowed by his uncle, played by Alaster Parker, they, amongst others, oversee the intended rescue of the animal. Nothing unusual in the tale, but, when blended with the music by Richard Taylor the whole thing becomes ethereal. The other parts are played by Anna Francolini, Lesley Nicol, Graig Pinder and Caroline Sheen. Jane Buckler supplies the libretto for all the excellent singers to show off their very obvious musical ability.
We shall hear more of Richard Taylor. © BA
