REVIEWS
If you want to see a period drama portraying sexual escapades try Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the Theatre Royal, York during their autumn repertory season. A tale of a vicomte whose reputation proceeds him, only to be superseded by his own ego to conquer the uninclined. Some interesting moments ensue as the cast go through their paces, whether in the bedroom or the dualing ground, but all contrived in the sitting room. Christopher Hamptons adaptation of Lacloss novel of 18th century French intrigues.
Le Vicomte de Valmont, played by Gareth Tudor Price, tackles his part with systematic competence, satisfying all the ladies until he meets his match in his past mistress La Marquise de Merteuil, played by Suzy Cooper. Further complications ensue as he becomes infatuated with the young Madame de Rosemonde, played by Carlene Reed. Various sub plots abound as the women try to manipulate the men, not always with the results they expect. A play to go and watch, not be told what you are about to see. The intervals between the scenes were enhanced by the leisurely withdrawal of the characters and the quietly efficient scenery rearrangement by the flunkeys.
The costumes complimented the stage design by designer Dawn Allsopp, and the direction by Damian Cruden and Lucy PitmanWallace brought the age of liaisons back to life. The audience appreciated the chance to see something different. © BA
