Every now and again it is a treat to see a play that is all that you expect of the theatre and this play by the actor Tom Courteney about a day in the life of the poet Philip Larkin is one of them. Pretending to be Me is set amounst the debris of moving into a new house, where the only character proceeds to remember the past and what things have amused him. All this presented beautifully in what must have been Larkins sarcastic turn of phrase, with poetry blending seamlessly into the reveries. This is a master actor enjoying himself and taking the audience along with him whilst he does so. The audience are with him completely from the time he appears from nowhere on the stage until they reluctantly let him leave it at the end. Courtenay looked embarrassed as he took one curtain call after another, but he had no cause to be. Everyone had witnessed one of those rare moments when you cannot quite believe what you have just experienced.

Only one thing to say about this play. Go and see it at all costs or miss a once in a lifetimes experience. © BA
